July 6, Paris

Flowers in Westminster Abbey Courtyard

Hi, Everyone,

I°m now in Paris, just arrived 2 hours ago and my room was not ready. So I am at an Internet cafe 2 blocks away. Thanks to all who did, for your replies. I have lots of time today at this cafe which has about 12 computers packed into a little storefront. Most of the customers are teenage boys with a few foreigners like myself. The keyboard is different with the a, q, w, z, and m moved. I can°t find the apostrophe so am using the ° symbol; Alssso the s sticksss! I did find the ! !

There was no commercial Internet Cafe near my hotel in London and the Internet center at the conference always had a line. As most of you know, besides being a 4 week vacation, I attended the 8th International Congress on Medical Librarianship from June 30 to July 5. This is a pretty good tax deduction! I found the 5 plenary sessions interesting but did not attend every one of the 9, yes nine, contributed paper sessions. The ones I did were interesting and, for the ones I didn°t, the fulltext, with more details, is on the Web!

The London Eye

The Houses of Parliament

One morning I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The silver display hall was particularly interesting. I saw a piece of silver that I have from my ancestors but never knew hat it was. It is a Victorian eye glasses case with a clip for the waist, a chain, and a velvet lined case. It is too small for today°s glasses so that use never occured to me.

The conference hall was across the street from Westminster Abbey so I went there during lunch one day. With the conference, I went to the Royal Society of Medicine for dinner and the British Medical Association for lunch. Also a dinner cruise on the Thames. With a friend of mine from college, Deena, I went to the new Tate Modern which was a fantastic museum holding works of art done since 1900. Some people would put "art" in quotes when describing some of the installations.

Yesterday, I when to the British Museum and walked through Covent Garden, having dinner there which was a steak and kidney pudding; The waitress said it was "stodgy" with alot of "suet" but I ordered it anyway and it was good!

I°ve been at this a while due to the keyboard problems so will sign off for now. I°ll probably be able to get off another letter in Paris. I°m not sure about the Alps! Jim joins me on Sunday and we take the train to Chamonix on Monday.

Signing off; your virtual friend;

Roz
